Research Focus
It is estimated that every year two million very young children are subjected to various surgical procedures, thereby requiring frequent exposures to general anesthetics (GAs) at a very young age (as early as 20 weeks, post-conception). It is well known that common GAs have either N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor-blocking and/or -aminobutyric acid (GABA)-mimetic properties, the effects of which are believed to be the basis for their developmental neurotoxicity. Therefore, a key challenge is to clarify the cellular mechanisms that underlie long-lasting neurodevelopmental effects of currently available GAs to inform effective therapeutic strategies that could make clinical anesthesia practice safer in operating rooms, radiology imaging suites, and intensive care units. Our long-term goal is to investigate mechanisms that lead to lasting dysfunction of ion channels after exposure of young brains to common GAs and to discover novel and safer GAs that can be used in the youngest patient populations. The main objective of the proposed research is to understand effects of administration of a common GA such as Sevoflurane (Sevo) in rodents at an early age on plasticity of ion channels…
